Diphtheria bacteria. Colored transmission electron micrograph of a section through a group of Corynebacterium diphtheriae bacteria, the causative agent of the disease diphtheria. The Gram-positive bacteria are inhaled or contracted by direct contact with an infected person. It produces a toxin that causes a sore throat, breathing difficulties and fever.
