Dental plaque, colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Plaque consists of bacteria (red and yellow) embedded in a glycoprotein matrix (orange). The matrix is formed from bacterial secretions and saliva. If not removed regularly, plaque can lead to dental cavities (caries) or periodontal problems (such as gingivitis). Magnification: x6000 when printed at 10 centimeters wide.
