Contraceptives
Description:
The vaginal ring (Nuvaring) is a hormonal estroprogestative contraceptive. When inserted into the vagina, it slowly releases estrogen and progestin hormones into the body. These hormones stop ovulation and thicken the cervical mucus, creating a barrier to prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg. The birth control patch is applied directly to the skin and continuously delivers two synthetic hormones, progestin (norelgestromin) and estrogen (ethinyl estradiol). These synthetic hormones impede pregnancy by preventing ovulation. The patch also causes the cervical mucus to thicken. Contraceptive implants (Norplants), are placed under the skin of the arm. These small tubes, filled with a female hormone (usually progesterone), are designed to give up to a 5-year sustained release of hormone into the blood.
