Contact dermatitis caused by a girl's necklace
Description:
Contact dermatitis. Close-up of the neck of a 17 year old girl showing a rash caused by an allergy to the metal in her necklace. This type of skin reaction, called contact dermatitis, is best dealt with by avoiding the substance that provokes it. The most common allergy of this type is caused by nickel, a metal commonly used in jewellery. Severe dermatitis rashes can be controlled by corticosteroid drugs. Scratching should be avoided to prevent further damage to the skin, which could lead to infection.
