Colour portrait of the Guglielmo Marconi
Description:
Colour portrait of Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937), Italian physicist, photographed at the age of 22. Marconi was tutored privately in his youth, later entering formal education at the Technical Institute of Livorno. At the age of 21, Marconi developed his first radio equipment, with a range of about 1.5km. The British government became interested in radio, and in 1899 Marconi made a transmission across the English Channel. Two years later Marconi made his first trans-Atlantic transmission, and in 1909 he won the Nobel Prize for Physics. He founded the Marconi Company (now GEC-Marconi), and devoted the rest of his life to radio communications.
