To its east is the Royal Opera House, to its south is the Plaza de la Armas and Almudena Cathedral, to its west are the large Campo del Moro gardens, leading down to the Manzanares River (down left). The Royal Palace is the largest in Western Europe with some 2800 rooms. Image data obtained on September 7th, 2009. The US-operated GeoEye-1 satellite was launched in September 2008, and orbits at a height of 680 kilometers. It is the world's highest resolution commercial Earth-imaging satellite.
