Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva)
Description:
Atop California's White Mountains stand the largest remaining population of Bristlecone Pine trees (Pinus longaeva). The high elevation (11,000+ feet) and harsh conditions make this location prime habitat for these hardy trees, while excluding most other trees. The long, harsh winters followed by a short growing season is considered one factor that contributes to the long lifespans of these trees, some of which live for almost 5000 years.
