Blood cells. Colored scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of red blood cells (erythrocytes, red) and two white blood cells (leucocytes, cream). Red blood cells are carriers of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Their biconcave surface provides maximum surface area for the exchange of gases.
