Barred and Ringed Spiral Galaxy, M95, NGC 3351
Description:
The SBb barred spiral galaxy M95, possibly ringed, is a member of the Leo I galaxy grouping. This picture was taken in December 1994 at the KPNO 0.9-meter telescope and shows the fainter outer regions of the galaxy, as well as various small faint background galaxies The morphological appearance of a galaxy can change dramatically between visual and ultraviolet wavelengths. In the case of M95, the nucleus and bar dominate an optical image. In an ultraviolet image the bar is not even visible and the ring and spiral arms dominate.
