Ammonite fossil
Description:
Ammonite fossil. This ammonite is Sphenodiscus lenticularis. The ammonites were a group of now extinct marine organisms. The outer shell has been partially removed, showing the interior of this shellfish. Details include the partitions (septa) that divide the interior of the shell into separate chambers. Parts of the exterior shell that are preserved display an iridescence that is typical for this ammonite. This fossil was found in the Fox Hills formation (Late Cretaceous), South Dakota, USA. It is 25 centimeters across.
