Graves Eye Disease
This color enhanced coronal (from the front) CT reconstruction of the orbits (where the eyes are) demonstrates marked thickening of all of the extraocular muscles within the orbits. This person also has bilateral proptosis (eyes bulging). This is the result of Grave's disease also called thyroid opthalmopathy which is an autoimmune disorder. Patients can be euthyroid, hyperthyroid or hypothyroid. The green muscles are the medial rectus. The orange muscles are the inferior rectus. The blue muscles are the lateral rectus. The purple muscles are the superior rectus and the superior oblique muscles are red. The optic nerves are the deep round red structures in the center of each orbit. The superior ophthalmic veins are the small blue ovoid structures just beneath the superior rectus muscles (purple).
