Paleontologists Paul Tafforeau and Malvina Lak studying fossil insect models at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. The models are based on insects found in 100-million-year-old opaque amber (fossilized conifer plant resin) and X-rayed at ESRF. The X-rays here are one thousand billion times brighter than hospital X-rays and are able to image the interior of opaque amber samples at high resolution. Multiple scans of the sample creates virtual 'slices' that can be reconstructed into 3-D computer models (as shown on the computer monitor) or printed into physical models using 3-D inkjet printers (as held by the researchers).Credit:Pascal Goetgheluck / Science SourceSize:5616px × 3744px (~60 MB)Restrictions:No Sale through SubagentsGet PricingHow Will The Visual Be Used?ShareKeywords:100 million years old-3d inkjet-3d inkjet printer-3-d inkjet printer-3-d inkjet printing-3-d lithography-3d model-3-d model-3d print-3d printer-3-d printer-3d printing-3-d printing-adult-amber fossil-animal-ant-biology-caucasian-E442/0757-E4420757-enlargement-europe-european synchrotron radiation-facility-female-formicidae-fossil amber-fossil invertebrate-fossilized-fossils-france-french-grenoble-holding-human-inclusion-inkjet printing-insect-invertebrates-lab-male-malvina lak-man-mid-cretaceous-model-model ant-nat-paleontologist-paleontology-paul tafforeau-rapid prototyper-rapid prototyping-researcher-woman-zoologyFolder Legacy Identifier:spl001_hdModel release:Not releasedParent folder:SPL bulkload #7
