Ear trumpets were used to aid those with difficulties in hearing. Sound waves enter the wide end and become amplified as they pass along the narrow tube and into the earpiece. The tip of the earpiece is placed in the ear canal of the user, amplification of the sound makes it easier to hear. The fan shape and silk decoration was designed to make the device more discrete, 'acoustic fans' as they were called became very popular in the 19th century.
