The Fall of Constantinople was the capture of the capital of the Byzantine Empire by an invading army of the Ottoman Empire on May 29, 1453. The Ottomans were commanded by Mehmed the Conqueror, who defeated an army commanded by Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos. The capture of Constantinople marked the end of the Roman Empire, an imperial state that had lasted for nearly 1,500 years. The Ottoman conquest of Constantinople also dealt a massive blow to Christendom, as the Muslim Ottoman armies thereafter were left unchecked to advance into Europe without an adversary to their rear.Credit:New York Public Library / Science SourceSize:3153px × 3759px (~33 MB)Get PricingHow Will The Visual Be Used?ShareKeywords:1450s-1453-15h century-ancient byzantium-besieged-byzantine-ottoman wars-capital city-capital of the eastern roman empire-capital of the ottoman empire-conquest of istanbul-constantinople-emperor-end of the roman empire-fall of constantinople-famous-gunpowder empire ancient byzantium-history-impregnable fortress-islam-istanbul-man-medieval-mehmed ii-mehmed the conqueror-ottoman-ottoman army-painting-panagiotis zografo-personality-roman empire-siege-siege of constantinople-sultan-sultan mehmed ii-turkish-turkish army-walled cityModel release:N/AParent folder:16806
