Failed hip resurfacing. Colored X-ray of failed hip resurfacing in a patient's pelvis. Hip resurfacing is where just the top of the femoral head and the socket of the pelvis bone is replaced with metal parts (white) that act as a new joint. In this patient, however, a periprosthetic fracture (a fracture around a joint prosthesis, seen as a red crack at lower left) has occurred in the shaft of the femur (thigh bone). This complication often requires further surgery.
