Ear trumpets were used to aid those with difficulties in hearing. Sound waves enter the wide 'sound collecting' dome which acts as a parabolic reflector, focusing the sound into the mouth of the extendable tube. The sound becomes amplified as it passes along the narrow tube and into the earpiece. The tip of the earpiece is placed in the ear canal of the user, amplification of the sound makes it easier to hear. This piece is in faux tortoiseshell, it is made of celluloid and dates from around 1900, England.Credit:SPL / Science SourceSize:5199px × 3361px (~49 MB)Restrictions:No Sale through SubagentsGet PricingHow Will The Visual Be Used?ShareKeywords:1900-1900s-20th century-acoustic-acoustics-aid-aids-amplification-amplifies-amplify-antique-antiques-audiology-auditory-banjo-C019/8162-C0198162-celluloid-deafness-device-devices-ear-ear horn-ear horns-ear trumpet-ear trumpets-england-english-extendable-faux tortoiseshell-green background-hear-hearing-hearing aid-hearing aids-history-instrument-instruments-medical instrument collection-medicine-parabolic-partial deafness-sound-sound collector-sound collectorsModel release:N/AParent folder:SPL FTP 140328-29
