Cartwright was a clergyman who, after visiting Richard Arkwright's factory, became interested in new methods of weaving. In 1785 he invented a power loom. He patented a wool-combing machine in 1789 and an alcohol-fueled steam engine in 1797. Despite filing numerous patents, his inventions did not make him much money. To reward his achievements the British Government awarded him ten thousand pounds in 1809. He retired to a farm in Kent and continued inventing, making improvements to farm machinery.Credit:Maria Platt-Evans / Science SourceSize:3861px × 4724px (~52 MB)Restrictions:No Sale through SubagentsGet PricingHow Will The Visual Be Used?ShareKeywords:18th century-19th century-adult-alcohol-fueled steam engine-art-C002/0915-C0020915-caucasian-clergyman-edmund cartwright-english-europe-fabric industry-history-history of technology-human-industrial revolution-industry-inventor-male-man-person-portrait-power loom-surname c-technology-textile manufacturing-vicar-weaving-white-wool-combinFolder Legacy Identifier:spl001_hdModel release:N/AParent folder:SPL bulkload #7
